Abstract: Discusses maritime adaptations in North Pacific coastal environments, beginning in greater "Amuria", region of Amur river mouth, Okhotsk Sea, Sea of Japan and Japanese archipelago. There is little evidence predating mid-Holocene of use of marine resources north of region (Kuriles, Kamchatka, Chukotka). Use by earliest coastal cultures in Alaska, from around 8,300 years ago and Ocean Bay culture, Kodiak Island from 7,000 years ago, may reflect result of north-east Asian migrations.
