Record #172404:

The ecology of benthic freshwater plants in some Antarctic lakes / Julian Priddle.

Title: The ecology of benthic freshwater plants in some Antarctic lakes / Julian Priddle.
Author(s): Priddle, Julian.
Date: 1979.
Publisher: [Reading] :
Abstract: Describes ecology of benthic algae and mosses in clear lakes on Signy Island, South Orkney Islands, based on field work from 1974-77. Lakes are nutrient-poor and freeze to depth of one metre for nine months, with underwater irradiance varying 1,000-fold between midsummer and midwinter. Results indicate that slow growth rates are offset by capacity to grow at very low irradiances. Low compensation points were confirmed by laboratory studies, as was their critical dependence on temperature, implying that lowered respiration rate contributes to success of plants at lake temperatures. Describes further adaptation of aquatic mosses, whose long stems support complex epiphytic algal community which accounted for much of primary production of moss community.
