Record #172366:

Glacial cycles: toward a new paradigm / Didier Paillard.

Title: Glacial cycles: toward a new paradigm / Didier Paillard.
Author(s): Paillard, Didier.
Date: 2001.
In: Reviews of Geophysics. (2001.), Vol. 39(3) (2001)
Abstract: Reviews milestones in discovery of ice ages and presents in detail astronomical theory and simple conceptual models. Identifies problems with existing theory of paleoclimate: lack of significant orbitally induced changes at 100-kyr period, despite this being main climatic cyclicity; appearance of most prominent glacial-interglacial transition when orbital variations are minimal; change at ~0.8 Ma from 41-kyr to 100-kyr cyclicity without major orbital changes; and evidence for abrupt changes in temperature and ice sheet configuration. Discusses how new observational evidence and use of concept of thresholds may help define new paradigm for glacial cycles to solve difficulties with "classical" astronomical theory.
