In: Reviews of Geophysics. (2000.), Vol. 38(2) (2000)
Abstract: Examines glacial/interglacial atmospheric pCO₂ cycles observed in Antarctic ice cores and inability of current models to generate observed glacial pCO₂. Models ocean and sediment geochemical system to: (1) evaluate effect of CaCO₃ compensation on various ideas for lowering pCO₂ of glacial atmosphere; and (2) predict sensitivity of carbon cycle to climate and geochemical conditions observable only indirectly through sedimentary record. Incorporates sedimentary diagenesis component simulating role of CaCO₃ compensation in determining atmospheric pCO₂, and iron cycle component predicting effect of atmospheric iron deposition on carbon uptake by photosynthesis. Describes model and applications to today's and glacial oceans. Compares with paleoceanographic evidence and reviews assumptions fundamental to chemical oceanography.
