Ship collisions with icebergs: a brief review, past to present / Brian T. Hill.
Title: | Ship collisions with icebergs: a brief review, past to present / Brian T. Hill. |
Author(s): | Hill, Brian T. |
Date: | 2005. |
Abstract: | Reviews history of shipping encounters with icebergs, including: St. Brendan's description of a "column of pure crystal" around 570 AD; first recorded accident, in which part of ice cliff fell onto whaling vessel in Spitsbergen in 1619; first recorded collision in 1686; increasing incident frequency and loss of life with increased trade and emigration between Europe and North America; sinking of "unsinkable" vessels such as Titanic and Islander; birth of International Ice Patrol and later Danish Greenland Ice Patrol; to modern-day collisions. Ninety years since inception of International Ice Patrols have seen 100 collisions, compared with 350 in 90 years before. No collision has occurred outside published Limits of All Known Ice. |
