Record #172359:

Oceanography / US Coast Guard International Ice Patrol staff.

Title: Oceanography / US Coast Guard International Ice Patrol staff.
Author (corporate): US Coast Guard International Ice Patrol staff.
Date: 2005.
Abstract: Describes oceanographic work of International Ice Patrol, aimed primarily at understanding and forecasting movement of icebergs in ocean currents. Covers history from 1914, particularly in Grand Banks region, noting first vertical sampling of water column in 1919, introduction of inductive salinometer in 1926 and geomagnetic electrokinetograph current meter in 1948, development of airborne radiometer in 1954, early extensive studies of formation, drift and deterioration of sea ice and glacial ice, and use of drifting buoys. Describes North Atlantic and Arctic currents (East Greenland, West Greenland, Labrador etc.) that bring icebergs south, and meeting of Arctic and Gulf Stream waters around Tail of Grand Banks.
Notes:

Offprint: Proceedings of the Marine Safety and Security Council, the Coast Guard Journal of Safety at Sea. Spring :21-24.
