Abstract: Attempts to explain presence of vast high-latitude reservoirs of near-surface ice in both Martian hemispheres. Proposes formation by direct ice deposition during periods of low obliquity, as result of sublimation from equatorial ice reservoir formed during earlier prolonged high-obliquity excursion. Using global climate simulations to estimate water-ice accumulation over past 10 Myr, shows large variations of Mars' obliquity have allowed formation of such metres-thick, sedimentary layered deposits in high-latitude and polar regions. Suggests "chaotic diffusion" of Mars' obliquity over longer timescales means similar ice-redeposition may have occurred throughout martian geological history, producing ice reservoirs much larger than so far revealed.
