Big thaw / Daniel Glick.
Title: | Big thaw / Daniel Glick. |
Author(s): | Glick, Daniel. |
Date: | 2004. |
In: | National Geographic. (2004.), Vol. 206(3) (2004) |
Abstract: | Examines "geosigns" of putative climate change. Illustrates with, e.g., rising temperatures, retreating glaciers, fracturing ice shelves, decreasing sea ice area, rising sea level, melting permafrost, shrinking lakes. Glaciological examples come from Alps, Montana, Peru, Beaufort Sea, Larsen ice shelf, Alaska, etc. Relates views of working scientists. Examines economic and social consequences of rising sea level from, e.g., Louisiana, Tuvalu, Bangladesh. Discusses links between climate, snow and ice cover, ocean thermohaline circulation and atmospheric carbon dioxide, illustrating with recent observations. |
