Abstract: Presents laboratory results from high resolution imagery of first-year Arctic sea ice. Data from vertical thin sections reveal significantly different distributions of brine pockets and gas bubbles than previously reported. Describes imaging system capable of resolving inclusions <0.01 mm in diameter, and observations of microstructure at -15°C to obtain size distributions for brine inclusions and gas bubbles in cold ice. Reports large changes to microstructure during cooling to -30°C and warming to -2°C, reflecting thermal evolution of ice and interactions between brine inclusions, gas bubbles and precipitated salts. Total cross-sectional area of inclusions increases dramatically below -23°C or above -5°C, but is surprisingly constant within this range because changes in brine inclusions offset changes in precipitated salts.
