Abstract: | Suggests method for sub-pixel snow mapping based on experience with remote sensing of aerosols. Notes that need for knowledge of spectral reflectance properties of both snow and background material makes present methods for remote sensing of subpixel snow cover difficult to apply globally, that similar problems arise in global remote sensing of aerosol particles over varying land terrain, and that both aerosol and snow are dark at 2.1 μm. Uses pixel reflectance at 2.1 μm to estimate reflectance of non-snow regions in pixel at 0.66 μm. Uses difference between total pixel brightness at 0.66 μm and derived brightness of same pixel without snow to estimate sub-pixel snow cover with error usually < ±0.05. |
