Abstract: Derives specific ablation rate in transect of Storstrømmen, a large outlet glacier from north-east Greenland ice sheet, by combining airborne laser altimetry measurements with emergence/submergence velocities derived from satellite synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) and airborne ice-sounding radar measurement of ice thickness. Compares results with in situ observations of ablation at poles drilled into glacier. Reports agreement between derived and observed ablation rates satisfactory, considering different measurement periods for different data sets. New method of deriving specific mass balance, particularly ablation rate, by remote sensing measurements alone has potential to substantially increase density of observational based ablation rates on ice sheet and ice cap margins.
