| Abstract: | Presents results of permafrost studies coordinated by PERMOS (Permafrost Monitoring Switzerland). Places PERMOS in context of cryosphere monitoring generally. Illustrates permafrost features such as rock glaciers, thermokarst, etc. Describes snow conditions of winters 2000/01 and 2001/02, monthly weather summaries for period, and areas whose study formed part of PERMOS pilot phase. Describes and illustrates field investigations. Presents temperature depth profiles at nine sites through up to 100 m of permafrost, temperature time series at depths around 10 m since 1997 for 5 sites (since 1987 at Múrtel), and modelled and observed horizontal and vertical permafrost distributions. |
