Record #172333:

"Kaltes" eis am Äquator / Oliver Stebler.

Title: "Kaltes" eis am Äquator / Oliver Stebler.
Translated title: "Cold" ice on the Equator.
Author(s): Stebler, Oliver.
Date: 2003.
Language: German.
In: Alpen : Zeitschrift des Schweizer Alpen-Clubs. (2003.), Vol. 5 (2003)
Abstract: Discusses status of tropical glaciers, focussing on Equatorial Africa and Kilimanjaro, which has lost 80% of its ice cover since 1912. At current rates, "Roof of Africa" will be ice free by 2015-2020. Describes and illustrates Kilimanjaro's summit area and ice cover and summarises tropical glaciation elsewhere in Africa and world. Describes recent glaciological and meteorological investigations on Kilimanjaro, noting importance of ice ablation through sublimation, ice thickness decrease of 17 m from 1962-2000, presence of permafrost, ablation features, etc. Summarizes climatology over last 11,700 years revealed by ice coring in 2000.
