Abstract: Analyzes mass balance and other glacier regime components (equilibrium line altitude, accumulation area ratio, etc.) using direct measurements from around 300 mountain and subpolar glaciers outside ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica. Measurements have been continuous since 1946, reaching statistically significant number in period 1961-1998. Focuses on description of globally averaged indices of glacier regime. Discusses changes in glacier regimes on global scale, increase in glacier mass balance sensitivity to air temperature, intensification of global water cycles due to change in glacier regime, and potential of glacier retreat to continue. Concludes last, most significant change started in 1988, since when all indices have changed by 5-10%. In special issue Mountain hydrology and water resources.
