Record #172318:

South Island, New Zealand; ice advances and marine shorelines / R.P. Suggate.

Title: South Island, New Zealand; ice advances and marine shorelines / R.P. Suggate.
Author(s): Suggate, R. P.
Date: 2004.
Publisher: Amsterdam: Elsevier
In: Quaternary glaciations - extent and chronology : Part III South America, Asia, Australia, Antarctica. (2004.),
Abstract: Gap of at least 1 Ma followed earliest, Late Pliocene glaciations of Ross (thought to be 2.4-2.5 Ma) and Porika. Glaciation affected few areas of North Island, with tectonic uplift and volcano building only sufficient to exceed snowline during late Pleistocene. Describes South Island's glacial record, discussing evidence of ice limits and raised shorelines. All glaciers flowed from main divide, with maximum advance of late Otira Glaciation (Marine Isotope Stage 2) leaving most prominent record. Describes glacier systems of Waimakariri-Rakaia-Ashburton-Rangitata, upper Waitaki, upper Clutha, Mararoa and eastern Fiordland. Presents South Island chronology containing seven advances correlated with MIS. Complementary digital maps on CD included with volume.
