Record #172315:

Quaternary glaciation in the Atlas mountains of north Africa / P.D. Hughes, P.L. Gibbard, J.C. Woodward.

Title: Quaternary glaciation in the Atlas mountains of north Africa / P.D. Hughes, P.L. Gibbard, J.C. Woodward.
Author(s): Hughes, P. D.
Gibbard, P. L.
Woodward, J. C.
Date: 2004.
Publisher: Amsterdam: Elsevier
In: Quaternary glaciations - extent and chronology : Part III South America, Asia, Australia, Antarctica. (2004.),
Abstract: Describes glacial and periglacial features present throughout Atlas mountains. These include cirques, troughs, moraines and relict rock glaciers. Perennial snowfields still occur, as does periglacial activity above 2000 m. Chronology requires clarification, but three Pleistocene glacial phases are recognised, the last equated with Soltanian (= Würmian/MIS 2). Earlier phases may have occurred during Tensiftian and Saletian, and most recent during Younger Dryas. Snowlines were lowered to 3300 m a.s.l. in High Atlas, and 1900-2000 m in Algerian Tell. Discusses palaeoclimatic implications. Complementary digital maps on CD included with volume.
