Record #172308:

Late Quaternary glaciation of northern India / Lewis A. Owen.

Title: Late Quaternary glaciation of northern India / Lewis A. Owen.
Author(s): Owen, Lewis A.
Date: 2004.
Publisher: Amsterdam: Elsevier
In: Quaternary glaciations - extent and chronology : Part III South America, Asia, Australia, Antarctica. (2004.),
Abstract: Notes glacial reconstruction hampered by political and logistical problems and lack of numerical dating. Latter makes correlations between areas with very different climates and weathering rates difficult and snapshot for any particular time impossible. Describes geological setting and reviews extensively studied mountain ranges and valley systems of Kashmir, Lahul Himalaya, Zanskar, Ladakh and Garhwal, presenting maps of former and current glaciation, moraines, etc. Concludes millennial-scale glacier oscillations reflect periods of positive mass-balance coincident with increased insolation and enhanced summer monsoon. Reports LGM ice fronts were within c. 10 km of present, with no unequivocal evidence for Younger Dryas advance. Complementary digital maps on CD included with volume.
