Record #172303:

Quaternary glaciations in the East African mountains / Henry Osmaston.

Title: Quaternary glaciations in the East African mountains / Henry Osmaston.
Author(s): Osmaston, Henry.
Date: 2004.
Publisher: Amsterdam: Elsevier
In: Quaternary glaciations - extent and chronology : Part III South America, Asia, Australia, Antarctica. (2004.),
Abstract: Discusses evidence from Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya, Rwenzori, Mount Elgon and Mount Aberdare. First three still carry small but rapidly diminishing glaciers and show evidence of several extensive glaciations from at least 300 ka BP. Reconstructs Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) glacier cover and equilibrum line altitudes (ELAs) by various methods. Notes LGM areal extents in inverse order to summit altitudes. ELAs are aspect dependent, with depression in LGM compared to 19th century indicating temperature depression of 5-6.5°C. Describes distinct LGM equatorial valley glacier type applicable to LGM glaciers on these mountains. Complementary digital maps on CD included with volume.
