| Abstract: | Summarizes investigations since 1950s of glaciations of Qinghai-Xizag (Tibet) plateau, Tianshan (Tien Shan) mountains, central mountains of Taiwan, and Taibai and Changbai mountain regions. Noting development of single Tibetan plateau ice sheet probably prevented by lack of precipitation, divides region into distinct areas of Karakorum-Kunlun-West Himalaya, Himalaya-Nianqingtanggula, Hengduan-Bayan Har, Qilian, and plateau hinterland. Presents geomorphological maps and summarizes local climates, glacial evidence and glaciations identified, correlating these with Marine Isotope Stages 2-4, 6 and 12. Earliest glaciation may predate MIS 12. Discusses results in context of palaeoclimate and plateau uplift. Complementary digital maps on CD included with volume. |
