Record #172296:

Pleistocene glaciations in the Mendoza Andes, Argentina / Lydia E. Espizua.

Title: Pleistocene glaciations in the Mendoza Andes, Argentina / Lydia E. Espizua.
Author(s): Espizua, Lydia E.
Date: 2004.
Publisher: Amsterdam: Elsevier
In: Quaternary glaciations - extent and chronology : Part III South America, Asia, Australia, Antarctica. (2004.),
Abstract: Separately summarises glacial stratigraphies and chronologies of Río Mendoza and Río Grande valleys. In Río Mendoza valley, five Pleistocene drifts are identified; Uspallata, Punta de Vacas, Penitentes, Horocones and Almacenes. During Upsallata, dated to early Middle Pleistocene or earlier, glaciers flowed for 100 km from Andean divide. Steady state equilibrium lines for Horcones, Penitentes and Punta de Vacas glaciations were c. 1000, 1200 and 1250 m lower than today's. In Rió Grande valley deposits are mappable into five units using relative-age criteria, morphology and radiocarbon dates. Describes these and attempts to correlate glaciations with those of Northern Hemisphere and Río Mendoza. Complementary digital maps on CD included with volume.
