Glaciations in Argentine Patagonia, southern South America / Andrea Coronato, Oscar Martinez, Jorge Rabassa.

Title: Glaciations in Argentine Patagonia, southern South America / Andrea Coronato, Oscar Martinez, Jorge Rabassa.
Author(s): Coronato, Andrea.
Martinez, Oscar.
Rabassa, Jorge.
Date: 2004.
Publisher: Amsterdam: Elsevier
In: Quaternary glaciations - extent and chronology : Part III South America, Asia, Australia, Antarctica. (2004.),
Abstract: Revises extent of Plio-Pleistocene glaciations in Argentine Patagonia. Believes valley and piedmont glaciers flowed from Andean summit ice sheet several hundred km eastwards into Extra-Andean plains, probably reaching present Atlantic submarine platform several times during Early Pleistocene. Following Caldenius and using recent evidence, defines six or seven terminal ice positions. Most extensive event was Great Patagonian Glaciation (GPG) around 1 Ma BP. Reviews evidence and reconstructions from Northern and Southern Patagonia. Identifies: pre-GPG glaciations with poorly known boundaries but significant dating; three major post-GPG advances older than Last Glaciation; Last Glaciation (= Würmian); at least one or two Late Glacial advances. Complementary digital maps on CD included with volume.
