Record #172292:
Late Pleistocene glaciation of the Hindu Kush, Afghanistan / Stephen C. Porter.
Title: | Late Pleistocene glaciation of the Hindu Kush, Afghanistan / Stephen C. Porter. |
Author(s): | Porter, Stephen C. |
Date: | 2004. |
Publisher: | Amsterdam: Elsevier |
In: | Quaternary glaciations - extent and chronology : Part III South America, Asia, Australia, Antarctica. (2004.), |
Abstract: | Note difficulties with access and scarcity of field data. Proposes chronologies based on inferred correlations with other regions, rather than radiometric ages. Most estimates of glacial extent are based on remote-sensing. Summarises Porter's use of LANDSAT imagery to map extent of Late Pleistocene glaciers in Afghanistan, in which downvalley limits were assumed to be those of last glaciation. Longest glacier descended to 2600 m, largest extended 70 km along north-trending valleys. Full-glacial equilibrium line altitude lay between c. 400 and 4600 m, some 1000 + or - 100 m below today's. Complementary digital maps on CD included with volume. |
