Date: 2004.
In: International Journal of Remote Sensing. (2004.), Vol. 25(18) (2004)
Abstract: Discusses application of synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) to river/sea ice monitoring, especially to detection and prediction of problems related to ice jams. Presents InSAR principles, and results for two sites in eastern Canada: St Louis Lake on St Lawrence river; and estuary of Restigouche river. Describes coherence and interferogram analyses. Discusses limiting factors; image acquisition frequency, minimum ice floe size, etc. Discriminates between vertical and horizontal movements using meteorological data, water level, water flow and ice charts. Interprets estimated deformation on piece of river ice as first sign of break-up. Qualitative interpretation on busy estuary seaway highlighted interaction between river and tidal flows affecting ice cover.
