Abstract: Relates spatial and temporal variability of seasonal thaw depths to horizontal structure and dynamics of vegetation cover in tundra, forest-tundra and taiga zones of Siberia and European Russia. Observes minimum values of seasonal thaw depth in all bioclimatic zones on peatlands with Rubus chamaemorus/Ledum palustre/Sphagnum/Cladina cover. Maximum tundra-zone thaw depths are on sandy dry sites with no vegetation cover. In northern taiga deep thaw occurs on large sedge-moss pools within peatlands and on bogs. Cloudberry Rubus chamaemorus is most reliable indicator of minimum thaw depth. Studies annual variability in frequency of plant species with respect to changes in seasonal thaw depth, thawing index of air temperature, and summer and winter precipitation, aiming to distinguish between phytocoenoses developing in relatively stable and more varying ecological conditions.
