Abstract: Examines reliability of different lichenometric approaches previously used to estimate timing of LIA maxima in southeast Iceland, and investigates discrepancies. Using measurements of 12,000 lichens from 40 moraine fragments, attempts to: (1) re-date moraines at Skálafellsjökull (including first investigation of Sultartungnajökull) and Heinabergsjökull using published dating curves; (2) evaluate discrepancies in chronology from different techniques; (3) consider whether reassessed LIA maxima accurately reflect timing of glacier response to climate change, or are artefacts of landscape disturbance or dating technique. Favours dating of LIA maximum at Skálafellsjökull using lichen population gradient method (early 19th C.) to dating using average of five largest lichens (late 19th C.)
