Abstract: Documents retreat of Sermilik glacier tongue from 1890 to 2001 using maps, aerial photographs and satellite images. Investigates mass-balance conditions using measurements from balance years 2001/2 and 2002/3. Tongue disintegrated during last 15 years. Compares 1985 digital elevation model with 2003 laser altimetry to reveal thinning up to 120 m water equivalent. Estimates thinning in catchment area from positive-degree-day modelling using 41-years of monthly mean air temperatures at Narsarsuaq. Describes dynamics of retreat and estimates dynamic and mass-balance contributions to glacier volume loss in ratio 55:45.
