Abstract: Reviews opportunities for applying satellite remote sensing techniques to study of frozen ground and permafrost, concentrating on most productive developments rather than synthesizing entire literature, and makes recommendations for future studies. Covers: permafrost distribution and active layer thickness using data from visible and near-infrared sensors; freeze/thaw classification using passive microwave data; and freeze/thaw cycles using radar data. Believes routine mapping of extent of surface thaw in permafrost regions and surface freeze in seasonally frozen ground regions is feasible with currently available SSM/I and SAR products if these are validated using snow cover extent, near surface air temperature, and "ground truth" measurements.
