Record #172247:

Late Quaternary glaciation of Tibet and the bordering mountains: a review / Frank Lehmkuhl, Lewis A. Owen.

Title: Late Quaternary glaciation of Tibet and the bordering mountains: a review / Frank Lehmkuhl, Lewis A. Owen.
Author(s): Lehmkuhl, Frank.
Owen, Lewis A.
Date: 2005.
In: Boreas. (2005.), Vol. 34(2) (2005)
Abstract: Reviews timing and extent of glaciation in Tibet, Himalaya, Transhimalaya, Tian Shan and Altai mountains, examining links with hydrology and environmental change. Highlights: problems of dating glacial successions and of using and calculating equilibrium line altitudes (ELAs) to quantify glaciation; usefulness of other palaeoclimate proxy data, e.g., loess, lacustrine, fluvial and palaeobotanical records; and importance of lake record - Pleistocene lakes in western Tibetan plateau covered four times present area. Suggests glaciation most extensive before last glacial cycle, generally more extensive early in last glacial cycle than during Last Glacial Maximum. Holocene advances also small. Discusses quantification of climate change from geological data and effect of uplift on glaciation.
