Record #172246:

The spatial distribution of ice breakup dates in Lake Baikal and time series of the ice breakup dates on Lake Khanka / Takashi Nonaka, Tsuneo Matsunaga, Akira Hoyano.

Title: The spatial distribution of ice breakup dates in Lake Baikal and time series of the ice breakup dates on Lake Khanka / Takashi Nonaka, Tsuneo Matsunaga, Akira Hoyano.
Author(s): Nonaka, Takashi.
Matsunaga, Tsuneo.
Hoyano, Akira.
Date: 2004.
Language: Japanese.
In: Seppyo : Journal of the Japanese Society of Snow and Ice. (2004.), Vol. 66(5) (2004)
Abstract: Presents method for estimating ice breakup dates using time series of lake surface temperatures derived from MODIS satellite remote sensing data. Noting paucity of in situ ice breakup data for Eurasian lakes, applies method to spatial distribution of breakup date on Lake Baikal over 3-year period. Breakup date varies over 3 to 6 weeks, depending mainly on latitude, and is about one week earlier on west coast than in centre. Examines time series of breakup dates over 20-year period on Lake Khanka, where date varies by 10 to 15 days over 5- to 10-year cycle. Observes no trend to earlier ice breakup.
