Record #172204:
Crystalline water ice on the Kuiper belt object (50000) Quaoar / David C. Jewitt, Jane Luu.
Title: | Crystalline water ice on the Kuiper belt object (50000) Quaoar / David C. Jewitt, Jane Luu. |
Author(s): | Jewitt, David C. Luu, Jane. |
Date: | 2004. |
In: | Nature. (2004.), Vol. 432(7018) (2004) |
Abstract: | Describes observation of crystalline ice on surface of Quaoar in Kuiper belt beyond Neptune using CISOO spectrometer at Subaru 8-metre telescope. Presents near-infrared reflection spectrum and compares with those of water-ice and of surfaces of Pluto and Charon. Presence of crystalline water ice implies heating at some point to at least 110 K. Current temperature of ~50 K and destruction of crystalline water ice by energetic particle irradiation on timescale ~10⁷ yr implies recent resurfacing of Quaoar, either by impact exposure of previously shielded ice or by cryovolcanic outgassing. |
