| Abstract: | Presents measurements of velocity of Jakobshavn Isbrae between 1992 and 2003 obtained from interferometric synthetic aperture radar, feature-tracking in visible imagery, airborne imagery and crevasse tracking with laser altimetry. Observes large variability, including slowing from 6.7 km/yr in 1985 to 5.7 km/yr in 1992 and speeding up to 9.4 km/yr in 2000 and 12.6 km/yr in 2003. Correlates these with laser altimetry measurements of thickening and thinning over same period. Reviews history of ice front changes. Discusses possible glacier dynamics and implications for glacier response to climate change and effect on sea level. |
