Abstract: Summarizes research related to strengthening of mercury contamination in Arctic ecosystem due to decrease in Arctic sea ice. Decreased level of gaseous mercury corresponds to ozone depletion in Arctic troposphere and associated increase of reactive halogen species (RHS). Products of ozone depletion (BrO and ClO) convert gaseous Hg⁰ to reactive gaseous mercury, which is subsequently deposited. RHS levels are enhanced as photochemical degradation of volatile halogenated organic compounds emitted from marine microalgae and inorganic species from sea salts increases with decreasing sea thickness and extent. Proposes future research.
