| Abstract: | Defines objective indexes of Arctic and Antarctic sea ice variation (AOI and AAOI) poleward of 20° N or 20° S. Bases work on Chen's definition of Antarctic sea ice Oscillation (ASO) index, projecting monthly concentration anomalies onto EOF (empirical orthogonal function)-1 spatial pattern. Uses data from GICE dataset spanning period 1981-2003. Demonstrates prominent features of Arctic and Antarctic sea ice variability provides numerical definition of spatial variability index. Compares with earlier studies of polar sea ice and identifies potential for clarifying variability. |
