Abstract: Analyzes video images from 48 boreholes in small Swedish glacier Storglaciären. Shows glacier's hydrological system dominated by hydraulically connected fractures that convey water at slow speeds. Detects these at all depths to near glacier bottom. Observations indicate fractures provide main route for surface water to reach deep within glacier. Uses observations to explain origin and evolution of englacial water flow system and its seasonal regeneration, and radar observations that reveal complex pattern of echoes rather than system of conduits, which apparently forms only under special circumstances. Discusses origin of englacial fractures (e.g. crevasse advection, in situ generation), their frequency of occurrence, and possible role in catastrophic ice shelf collapse.
