Ice and snow in paintings of Little Ice Age winters / Peter J. Robinson.
Title: | Ice and snow in paintings of Little Ice Age winters / Peter J. Robinson. |
Author(s): | Robinson, Peter J. |
Date: | 2005. |
In: | Weather. (2005.), Vol. 60(2) (2005) |
Abstract: | Examines winter weather portrayed in landscape painting from Netherlands, Belgium and northern France during "Little Ice Age" period 1400-1900. Discusses relationship between Winter Severity Index, seasonally average North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index, and likelihood of predominantly icy, or snow covered landscape and seeks correlation with landscapes reproduced in paintings. Observes dominance of snow in period 1400-1590; icy winters from 1590-1675, followed by period in which few landscape paintings were produced, then return of snow to dominance from 1815-1900. Discusses other factors, such as fashion, politics and economics, that influenced landscape painting content. Concludes artists indeed responded to contemporary weather and climate and discusses changes reflected. |
