Record #172189:

Formation and preservation processes of mountain permafrost in Tateyama mountains, the northern Japanese Alps, central Japan / Kotaro Fukui.

Title: Formation and preservation processes of mountain permafrost in Tateyama mountains, the northern Japanese Alps, central Japan / Kotaro Fukui.
Author(s): Fukui, Kotaro.
Date: 2004.
Language: Japanese.
In: Seppyo : Journal of the Japanese Society of Snow and Ice. (2004.), Vol. 66(2) (2004)
Abstract: Investigates permafrost formation and preservation under deep snow and heavy rainfall conditions in Tateyama mountains. Monitors subsurface temperatures down to 2.2 m at site (P) on north-facing slope of Kuranosuke cirque, and subsurface temperatures, soil water content, and precipitation at site (NP) on mountain crest above cirque. Permafrost is absent from site NP, where percolating warm summer rainwater produces rapid melting of seasonal ground frost. At site P rapid ground freezing in early winter, with subsurface cooling under thick winter snow cover, generates deep frost layer. Lingering snow cover until late summer prevents rain water percolation, making site favourable for permafrost.
