Energy and water budgets of the active layer in a larch forest and disturbed forest sites, near Yakutsk, eastern Siberia / Go Iwahan, Takashi Macimura, Yoshikazu Kobayashi, Masami Fukuda.

Title: Energy and water budgets of the active layer in a larch forest and disturbed forest sites, near Yakutsk, eastern Siberia / Go Iwahan, Takashi Macimura, Yoshikazu Kobayashi, Masami Fukuda.

Date: 2004.
Language: Japanese.
In: Seppyo : Journal of the Japanese Society of Snow and Ice. (2004.), Vol. 66(2) (2004)
Abstract: Describes monitoring of thermal and hydrological dynamics of active layer during thawing period May to September 2000, aimed at clarifying heat and water budgets and assessing influence of forest disturbance on permafrost. Compares mature larch forest site with site observed 11 years after wildfire and clear-felling. Finds latent heat storage largest component of heat budget. Attributes small difference in thaw depth between sites, despite larger ground heat flux at disturbed site, to higher initial ground ice content. Evapotranspiration at disturbed site 75% that of undisturbed site indicates greater storage of soil water. Concludes soil water content in active layer determines maximum thaw depth.
