Abstract: Examines feasibility and efficacy of chemical disinfection of microbial contamination on visitors' boots in relation to possible reduction in risk of translocation of pathogens into and between wildlife colonies. Results of 2002 and 2004 trials in Ross Sea region indicate abundant growth of bacteria on boots prior to disinfection was virtually eliminated by chemical disinfection, and that repeated disinfection substantially reduces bacterial growth.
