Independent expeditions and Antarctic tourism policy / Carl Murray, Julia Jabour.

Title: Independent expeditions and Antarctic tourism policy / Carl Murray, Julia Jabour.
Author(s): Murray, Carl.
Jabour, Julia.
Date: 2004.
In: Polar Record. (2004.), Vol. 40(215) (2004)
Abstract: Examines definitions of terminology used in relation to non-governmental activities in Antarctica, including tourist, tourism, non-governmental activities, adventure tourism, expedition, and support, and offers broad categorization of activities in Antarctic Treaty area, with overview of recent independent expeditions and discussion of issues arising. Argues that strict regulatory approach may be disproportionate to size of potential problems and could diminish traditions of cooperation, non-proprietorship and adventurous spirit characteristic of Antarctica.
