Abstract: Discusses environmental consequences of oil extraction in Sakhalin and in other Far Eastern regions of Russia. Reports that protest of civil representatives and NGO's against governmental decree of Russian Federation of 15th July 1999 which allowed disposal of toxic industrial waste in all Far Eastern seas, was upheld by Supreme Court. Environmentalist and indigenous associations won on this occasion, but, with new oil finds, future for region is uncertain.
