Abstract: Kola Saami have had domesticated reindeer since c. 12th century. Article describes mainly period since 1887, when some Komi arrived with 5 000 deer. In 1894 there were 43 000 domesticated animals, sending meat to Moscow and St Petersburg. Kolkhozes were set up in 1927. Agricultural programme was imposed from 1958-91, when deer number reached 77 300. Number stayed fairly stable, but perestroika hit meat trade.
