Abstract: Modernisers in 1910 wanted fisheries and other new livelihoods set up; traditionalists saw seal hunting as intrinsic to Inuit culture. Fish lacked seals' many uses other than food, but temperature rise from 1916 brought many fish into Greenland waters, so fisher numbers soared.
