Record #171339:

Petroleum hydrocarbon-degrading microbial communities in Beaufort-Chukchi Sea sediments: final report / Joan F. Braddock, Kathleen A. Gannon, Brian T. Rasley.

Title: Petroleum hydrocarbon-degrading microbial communities in Beaufort-Chukchi Sea sediments: final report / Joan F. Braddock, Kathleen A. Gannon, Brian T. Rasley.
Author(s): Braddock, Joan F.
Gannon, Kathleen A.
Rasley, Brian T.
Date: 2004.
Publisher: Fairbanks, AK: University of Alaska Coastal Marine Institute
Abstract: Results of survey conducted near Barrow and Prudhoe Bay of marine sediment microbial populations. Determined what microorganisms are present, metabolic capability for degradation of model petroleum hydrocarbons and effects of sediment on bioavailability of phenanthrene to hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria. Total numbers of microrganisms found to be higher than in more temperate locations. Suggests that biodegradation will be slow removal mechanism of contaminants from arctic marine environment.
