Abstract: Setting is increased interest in material culture among anthropologists, which leads to rather awkward relationship with museums, since notions of culture in them diverge from those current in anthropology. Article is based on three years as curator of ethnology in Greenland National Museum, Nuuk. Brief history of museum and description of current displays is tied to main theme and to modern roles of national museums, especially in post-colonial settings.
