Abstract: | Koren visited both polar regions and was on Belgica expedition at 17. He and Schaaning collected in East Finnmark and on Birkeland's aurora expedition to Novaya Zemlya in 1902-3. Koren was well-known outside Norway, but not at home. He made several voyages in Alaska and Siberia in search of bird skins and eggs, was shipwrecked twice, and died in hospital in Vladivostok. Schaaning worked on material from Arctic including Fram, Gjøa and Maud expeditions as conservator at Stavanger Museum following several visits to Pasvik, where he met his first wife, Finnish 15-year old Elsa Fiina, who died at 21, not before they had three children and learnt each other's language. |
