Abstract: Article offers methodological approach. Hearths are often well preserved. Effects on indoor climate are found from fire-cracked stones. Fire technology was versatile; experiment showed that Independence I people could spend High Arctic winter in tents in reasonable comfort, burning fat. Symbolic aspects of hearths are discussed.
