| Abstract: | Complements digital maps included with volume. Reviews evidence for Tertiary to Middle Pleistocene glaciations of Iceland. Earliest deposits are >4 Myr old. Full-scale glacial-interglacial cyclicity appears at 2.2-2.1 Myr and 1.6 Myr, with 6 to 8 glaciations in between. Presents hypothetical reconstruction of Tertiary glaciations. Tentatively correlates glacial deposits in Iceland with geomagnetic time scale and deep sea records of ¹⁸O and ice rafted debris. Describes evidence and chronology from Last Glacial Maximum to last deglaciation, early Holocene thermal maximum and onset of neoglaciation. Maps Iceland ice margins during Last Glacial Maximum, Younger Dryas and Preboreal. Discusses glacial limits, quality of data and dating, alternative interpretation, and open questions. |
