In: Australian solar terrestrial and space physics research. (2001.),
Abstract: Describes series of campaigns at Casey station, Antarctica from 1997-98 with aim of identifying and understanding polar patches. Patches identified from group range and critical frequencies on ionogram records were compared with drift measurements and other geophysical data sets. Good correlations were observed with Total Electron Content (TEC) derived from GPS satellite observations with receiver also located at Casey. Comparison with plasma drift velocities confirmed that patches are associated with fluctuations in horizontal drift velocity. In current study, peaks in magnitude of horizontal drift velocity correlate with patch edges. Presents case studies of three days of patch observations at Casey station in April 1998.
