Tidal periodicities in observations of the OH(6-2) emission from eastern Antarctica / P.A. Greet, D.J. Murphy, P.L. Dyson.

Title: Tidal periodicities in observations of the OH(6-2) emission from eastern Antarctica / P.A. Greet, D.J. Murphy, P.L. Dyson.

In: Australian solar terrestrial and space physics research. (2001.),
Abstract: Presents Fabry-Perot spectrometer observations of OH(6-2) Q1(1) line using observations made at Mawson and Davis stations, Antarctica, in 1993, 1995 and 1997, with particular reference to role of tidal perturbations in mesospheric dynamics. Lomb-Scargle periodograms show definitive 12 hour periodicity in meridional and zonal winds at both stations. Hydroxyl emission intensity has dominant 24 hour periodicity which may be either tidal or photochemical in nature. Superposed epoch analysis used to determine amplitude and phase of 12- and 24-hour periodicities shows that at high latitudes semi-diurnal tide is dominant with amplitudes of 10-30 m s⁻¹, while diurnal tide has amplitudes of only 0-5 m s⁻¹. Comparison with results from MF radar measurements at Davis station show larger amplitude for semi-diurnal tide in last two weeks of July than in first two weeks of August.
