Abstract: | Condensed paper. Reports study of seasonal heat and mass transfer in cold snow-accumulation area on Ushkovsky volcano. Observations include continuous temperature records from seven depths up to 27 m over period August 1996 - June 1998, annual measurements of snow-accumulation stakes, ice-mass balance and density measurements in pits, ice-core stratigraphy and meteorological data. Interprets using model simulating seasonal temperature variations in dry snow-firn layer. Infers temperature boundary conditions on ice-cap surface, and determines impact on thermal state of glacier below active layer. Estimates 28-year average mass balance rate and examines monthly variation. Compares observed with modelled temperatures and extracts short-term climate trend. |
